Lorraine "Raine" V. Ayers, 86, of Layton, died Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at home.

Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Lorraine was raised in Milford, Pennsylvania, and in 1948 married James (Fred) Ayers and they moved to his family farm in Layton. In 1952, Lorraine and her husband moved to Pennsville, NJ, where they raised their two children and lived until their retirement in 1984. Upon their retirement, Lorraine and her husband spent six years RVing across the country, including Alaska and Canada, and making many good friends along the way. They settled back in Layton and spent their winters in Florida.

A bookkeeper for DuPont in Deepwater, Lorraine retired in 1984 after 23 years
of service. She and Fred have also been owners of a Christmas Tree Farm in Layton for 30 years. A member of the Delaware Valley United Methodist Church, Lorraine enjoyed collecting open salts and was a member of Open Salt Collector Clubs. Other hobbies included sewing, knitting, needlework and traveling. She also enjoyed music, singing and line dancing. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, her family was of the utmost importance in her life.

The daughter of the late Frank Moses and Nellie Harriet (nee Sargent) Varney, Lorraine was predeceased by her two brothers, Irving and Roderic Varney, and her great-granddaughter, Lindsay Ayers. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, James (Fred) Ayers; two children, Judith Edgerly and husband, Mark, and Gary Ayers and wife, Georgette; her grandchildren, Barry Ayers, Corry Chrobak and husband, Kurt, and Danielle Baginski and husband, Adam; and great-grandchildren, Hunter Ayers and Carley Chrobak.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at the Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main Street Branchville, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Layton Cemetery.
