Barbara L. Metsger, 87, of Sparta died Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Bentley Assisted Living in Branchville.

Born and raised in Sussex, she was a graduate of Sussex High School and received her Bachelor's Degree in Music from Ithaca College. A lifelong resident of Sussex County, Barbara was a Founder and major benefactor of Father John's Animal House. She had an immense passion and love for animals, which she expressed through her countless hours of devotion to the shelter.

Predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Robert W. Metsger; her parents, Theodore M. and Charlotte (nee Lawrence) Holbert; and her brother Theodore F. Holbert. Barbara is survived by her son, Robert L. Metsger (Candice); her daughters, Mary Chong (Jack) and Deborah Metsger (Jeffrey Warren); 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; as well as her nieces, Amanda Haas (Tom), and Amy Darlington; her nephew, Philip Holbert (Karen); numerous great nieces and nephews, and Emily. Fondly remembered by Lorna Metsger.

The family expresses their gratitude to all those who have contributed to Barbara's care over the last few years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Lafayette House, Old Lafayette Village, 75 NJ-15 on Saturday, April 1st, at 1PM. A private burial service will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Sussex.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made to Father John's Animal House, 50 Father John's Lane, Lafayette, NJ 07848 www.fatherjohnsanimalhouse.org.
