Anne F. Newill, 98, of Midlothian, Virginia, formerly of Andover Township, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Brandermill Woods Healthcare in Midlothian.

Born and raised in Kearny, NJ, Anne attended Fairleigh Dickinson College in New Jersey for 2 years, and married Edward W. Newill on November 22, 1942, in Vancouver, Washington. They were married for 61 years before Edward passed away on February 24, 2004.

Edward W. Newill served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during WWII, and while Anne did not serve in the Army, she traveled by herself all the way across the country to Vancouver, Washington, to marry him. She then traveled with him to various bases across the United States, working as support staff at military bases and in canning factories in California before returning home to Kearny, NJ, when he was sent overseas.

They moved to Newton, NJ in 1947, living in the town of Newton before building a house in Andover Township in 1955. There they raised their two daughters, Carol and Laurie, and three foster daughters as well, until 2000 when they had to move due to health issues.

After living for a time with both Carol and Laurie, they moved into an apartment at the Brandermill Woods Retirement Community in Midlothian, VA, in 2001.

While living in Newton, Anne was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newton, serving as both Elder and Deacon. Both Anne and Ed were active in the Couples Club, and contributed greatly to the church family, organizing drives like the Steeple Fund and many other projects. Anne loved music and sang alto in the church choir for over 50 years. She and Ed were long-time, active members of the Eastern Star Melchior Chapter in Newton, serving as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron, and volunteering on many service projects. Anne also volunteered for many years at Newton Memorial Hospital.

Anne worked as a bookkeeper at Anken, then as a travel agent for Budd Travel in Newton. She worked part-time for Newton Savings and Loan, and eventually became Branch Bank Manager of Charter Savings and Loan.

At Brandermill Woods, Midlothian, Anne was active in the Women's Club, serving as president. She sang in the choir, took art classes and began painting again, producing many lovely oils. She also loved sewing and doing arts and crafts. Anne volunteered for many things, and participated fully in the many activities at the retirement community. She participated in her grandchildren's activities, attending numerous recitals and soccer games and other activities and attended her grandchildren's graduations. She served as her husband's constant caregiver until his passing in 2004.

She lived independently at the retirement community until May of 2016 when she moved to the Healthcare facility at Brandermill Woods.

The daughter of the late John Wolk and Mary Hano Wolk of Kearny, NJ, Anne was also predeceased by her husband, Edward W. Newill of Midlothian, VA, and her brothers, Fred Wolk of Lake Shawnee, NJ, and Joseph Wolk, of Kearny, NJ.

She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Carol Ann Newill and her husband, Brough Schamp, of Baltimore, MD; her daughter, Laurel Ann Newill and her husband, Dr. Brent Smith, of Midlothian, VA; her grandchildren, Paul Newill-Schamp of Baltimore, MD; Lisa Newill-Smith and her husband, David Wishart, of Berlin, Germany; and David Newill-Smith, of Los Angeles, CA.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 10, 2017, at the First Presbyterian Church, 54 High Street, Newton, NJ. Entombment will follow in Newton Cemetery Mausoleum. Viewing and visitation will be held on Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Newton, 54 High Street, NJ 07860, in memory of Anne and Edward Newill.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Brandermill Woods Retirement Community in Midlothian, Virginia.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton, NJ. Online condolences may be offered at www.smithmccrackenfuneralhome.com.
