John "Bill" W. Sylvester, 72, of Greentown, PA, died Sunday, March 5, 2017, at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ.

Born in Orange, NJ, Bill was raised in Montclair, NJ, and lived in Dingmans Ferry, PA, before moving to Greentown in 2016. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving from 1962 to 1966, and was stationed on the USS Bainbridge and the USS Jenkins, which was the third oldest ship in the Navy. A field service engineer, Bill was self-employed before his retirement in 2016, after which he worked part time at the Wallenpaupack Bowling Center.

An avid bowler and softball player, Bill was also a coach and referee. He enjoyed travel and reading, played bass guitar, and was a great story teller. Bill was also a fan of the New York Yankees, the New York Giants, and the New York Rangers.

The son of the late Ralph and Margaret (Berthold) Sylvester, Bill was also predeceased by his wife, Joyce A. Sylvester, on November 21, 2010. He is survived by his children, Bill Sylvester and wife, Pam, of Green Township, NJ, Claudine Sylvester and husband, Michael Macaulay, of East Hanover, NJ, Michael Sylvester of Greentown, and Maggie Sylvester of Morris County, NJ; his grandchildren, Olivia, Eve, Jake, Bobby, Annie, and Shayla; and his sister, Carol Rosenberg, of The Villages, FL.

The family expresses gratitude to the Heart Success Team at Morristown Medical Center for all that they did for their father, grandfather and brother.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, 2017, at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
