Helen Louise (Tommie) Tompkins passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 9th, 2017 at home. At 95 years young, she was predeceased by her beloved brother, John, whom she referred to as Bruvvie.

Helen was born in Chappaqua, NY, and raised four children. She is survived by her sister, Judy Mantovani; her children, Daniel Tompkins of Atlanta, GA; Nancy Tompkins, of St. Petersburg, FL; Sarah Tompkins (James) of Surprise, AZ; John Tompkins of Succasunna, NJ; two granddaughters, Kathy Mashaw of St. Petersburg, FL; Julie Murphy (Stephen) of Livingston, NJ; and three great granddaughters, Alison, Geena, and Lauren.

Tommie had so many loving family and friends it would take days to prepare and send her annual Christmas cards. She made friends easily and was fully present in her life. She was often at the center of the event planning at Christ Church in Newton, or writing the local town council regarding the recycling program or the need for benches for seniors around town and various stores. She enjoyed playing the piano, reading, working on her daily Sudoku, knitting, and visiting with her many friends. She often shared stories of her time as a nurse at Newton Memorial Hospital, where she retired to care for her elderly aunt, and then continue her work as a visiting nurse in her retirement years. She maintained contact with those friends during their monthly "nurses" luncheons. Helen was a caregiver. Tommie loved walking and the great outdoors and was a fixture among the Newton residents, greeting shopkeepers and strangers along the way. She was a bright light who will never be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Helen's name to the Christ Church, 62 Church Street, Newton, NJ 07860. A memorial garden will be created, in Helen's honor and as per her explicit instructions, later in the year.

A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, 62 Main Street, Newton, NJ, on Saturday, February 25th at 11:00 a.m. As you may know, red was Helen's favorite color. In her honor, please wear something red to the memorial service.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton. Online condolences may be offered at www.smithmccrackenfuneralhome.com.
