Clara Kane, 78, of the Layton section of Sandyston Township, died Sunday, February 12, 2017, in Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clares Hospital in Dover.

Born in Newton, Clara lived in Wharton before moving to Layton in 2004. She was employed in the Human Resources Department of Sears at the Rockaway Mall, retiring in 2004 with 27 years of service. A poll worker for the Morris County Board of Elections for over 20 years, Clara was an elected Morris County Democratic Committeeperson representing the 3rd District Wharton. She was a member of the Sandyston and Montague Seniors. Clara was a loving and devoted grandmother.

The daughter of the late Hixon and Lila (nee Cron) Spangenberg, Clara is survived by her husband, Joseph Kane, whom she married on January 26, 1975; her daughter, Cheryl Flood and husband, Jerry; her son, Michael Mulligan and wife, Vicki; four stepchildren, Joseph, Michael, William and Tara; as well as eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Hixon Spangenberg, Jr.; her sister, Ethel Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main Street, Branchville, with a 3 p.m. funeral service.
