Joseph J. Lennington, 91, of Sandyston Township, died Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice in Fredon Township.

Born at his paternal grandmother's home on Swartswood Road in Fredon Township, Joseph was a lifelong resident of Sandyston Township. He was the Estate Keeper at Harper Farms in Sandyston Township for over 40 years before his retirement. A life member of the Montague VFW, Joseph was also a member of American Legion Post 157 in Branchville. To honor veterans on Memorial Day, Joseph, on behalf of American Legion Post 157, placed American flags on veterans' graves in Montague, Mettler, Layton, Bevans, Walpack, and Flatbrookville cemeteries for many years. He also placed a flag at the memorial marker, located on Old Mine Road in Walpack, of Colonel John C. Rosenkranz from the 3rd Regiment of the Sussex County Militia.

The son of the late Charles C. and F. Lena (nee Hursh) Lennington, Joseph was also predeceased by a brother, Richard Lennington; two sisters, Edith Lennington and Emma Vogel; and a great-grandson, Corey D'Angelo. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Fern T. Lennington; four children, Jerry J. Lennington and wife, Elena, of North Carolina, Bette L. Urban and husband, Dean, of Branchville, Katherine M. Lennington of Sundown, New York, and John J. Lennington, Sr., and wife, Blanche, of Becket, Massachusetts; two stepchildren, Dennis Edgerly and wife, Peggy, of Hainesville section of Sandyston Township, and Tracy McHugh and husband, Michael, of Montague; thirteen grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, George and Paul Lennington; nieces and nephews; and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Graveside services will be held in Hainesville Cemetery on Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 11 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life.
