John J. Coats, 89, passed away following a long illness, on Thursday, February 2, 2017 at Bon Secours Hospital, St. Joseph Place, in Port Jervis, New York

Born in Warwick, New York, "Jack" was a longtime resident of Newton and a summer resident of Swartswood Lake. He attended Newton Public Schools K-12 and was a member of Newton High School Class of 1945. Jack left school in the middle of his senior year to join the Navy, receiving his diploma after proudly serving our Country during World War II from March 27, 1945, to July 19, 1946, where he attained the rank of FC3/c (Fire Control 3rd Petty Officer). He attended Blair Academy in 1947 and received his certification as Master Watchmaker from the Horological Institute of America in August of 1950.

Former owner/operator of John Coats Jewelers in Newton, and a third generation jeweler, he started working at the store repairing pocket watches and jewelry at the age of fourteen. As a young man, Jack was active in the Boy Scouts, he was an Eagle Scout, earning both the bronze and silver palm awards. Jack was a life member of Christ Church, a Post Commander and 50 year life member of Lt. Charles A. Meyer American Legion Post 86, an exempt fireman and 35 year member and former foreman of Newton Firemen Steamer Company No. 1, a member of Harmony Lodge No. 8 F&AM, and a life member of the Swartswood Yacht Club where he was Commodore, Director and Treasurer.

The son of the late John and Ruletta (nee Rogers) Coats, Jack was predeceased by his wife, Katharine Ann (nee Lovett) Coats, on August 14, 1987. He is survived by four daughters, Jo Ann LaCarrubba and husband, Roger, of Glen Spey, New York, Carol Ann Johnson and husband, Eugene, of Biglerville, Pennsylvania, Mary Ann Satter and husband, Michael, of Sandyston Township, and Peg Ann Coats of Newton. Lovingly known as "Poppy", he had nine grandchildren, Jessica Musilli and husband, Bob, Kory Loyola and husband, Roberto, Dominic LaCarrubba and wife, Nicole, Melanie Handelong and husband, Bob, Tony Johnson and wife, Jen, Ayla Bower and husband, Brian, Katharine Satter and Mario, Leigh Ann Adams and husband, Christian, and Paul Ford and Annie; ten great-grandchildren, Grace, Danny, Tino, Quentin, Olivia, Kyler, Cody, Jillian, Devi and Luca; as well as one sister, Bunny Coats. He is also survived by his oldest and dearest friend, Ginny Morville, and his only "son", George Morville.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at Christ Episcopal Church in Newton. Interment will follow in Tranquility Cemetery. Visitation will be held Monday, February 6, 2017, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton.
