Richard B. Messer, 72, of Lafayette died Friday, January 13, 2017, at Newton Medical Center.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Richard moved to Morris County, NJ, when he was 8 years old and has resided in Sussex County for the last 38 years. Richard received a Bachelor's of Science from Rutgers University in 1966, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Following graduation, he went to work at Picatinny Arsenal as a Civilian Ballistics Engineer, while concurrently earning his Masters of Science and Systems Management from the Florida Institute of Technology. Richard was an employee of Picatinny Arsenal for 36 years before his retirement in 2003. During his employment, he received several commendations from the Department of the Army, including Outstanding Handicapped Employee of the Year.

Richard was a hardworking man who loved his family unconditionally. He enjoyed playing Bridge with the Sparta Bridge Club and spent time volunteering at Newton Medical Center. He will be greatly missed.

Son of the late George and Agnes (nee Ristow) Messer, Richard is also predeceased by his brother, William Messer. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Linda (nee Lamwers) Messer; his son, Michael Messer and wife, Crystal; his daughter, Cynthia Messer and wife, Karen; his grandchildren, Noah, Trevor, Bryan and Krista; his sister, Marlene Wynarczuk and husband, Walter; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A memorial visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2017, with a 7 p.m. memorial service, at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St, Newton.
