James Zylstra, 77, of the Culver Lake section of Frankford Township, died Monday, January 9, 2017, at Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice in Fredon Township.

Born in the Province of Friesland, located in the northwest of the Netherlands, Jim immigrated to the United States at the age of 16 with his family. He worked with his father on the family farm in Fredon Township during his teenage years and was a 1960 graduate of Newton High School. While working on the farm, he acquired his love of welding and Fredon Welding began as a one-man operation in a barn on the farm. Jim was the owner/operator of the company and relocated his company to Woodport Road in Sparta. By the early 1980's, the stair production demand grew to the point that the shop in Sparta was too small to accommodate the demands of the marketplace so the company moved to its present location on Route 15 in Lafayette. Fredon Welding & Iron Works and Stairworld DeLafayette is a 6, 000 square foot facility which is well-known for top of the line products and works directly with local customers and contractors. They also have a custom line of fireplace accessories. Jim enjoyed sailing on Culver Lake and biking throughout Sussex, Morris and Warren Counties.

The son of the late Foppe and Ynskje (nee Farber) Zylstra, Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet Emily (nee Obreiter) Zylstra; six children, James S. Zylstra and wife,
Kathy, of Wantage, Suzanne Williamson and husband, Brian, of Milford, Pennsylvania, Peter M. Zylstra and wife, Maribelle, of Joppa, Maryland, Jennifer M. Morrow of Vernon, Jessica K. Zylstra of Branchville, and Denise Farese and husband, Christopher, of Parlin; and nine grandchildren, James, Michael and wife, Phyllis, Ashley, Brianna, Christopher, Brian, Zoey, Kyle and Emma. He is also survived by two brothers, Donald Zylstra of Minnesota and John Zylstra and his wife, Bonnie, of Johnson, New York; two sisters, Edith Ervey and husband, Thomas, of Morristown and Frances Kuipers of Virginia; cousins, Edith and John Tjepkema; as well as his in-laws, Carol and Bruce Gray and Merritt and Lois Obreiter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 13, 2017, at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton. Interment will follow in North Hardyston Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2017, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, 99 Sparta Avenue, Newton, NJ 07860 or The National Parkinson Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131. Online condolences may be offered at www.smithmccrackenfuneralhome.com.
