James William McCarten Sr., 86, of Coral Springs, Florida, died in his sleep on November 12, 2016.

James was born in Manhattan, NY, to Maddy and Jim McCarten. He attended in N.Y. Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School and Power Memorial Academy until 1948.

During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S.J. Douglas Blackwood DE-219 from 1950-1952. James received Commanding Officer Commendation dated January, 1952.

Jim spent his career in the Garment industry which accomplished a dream he had as a young man. Jim was extremely successful working in Sr. Management positions such as National Sales Manager and President with well-known companies such as London Fog, Hart Schaffer & Marx and Palm Beach, among others. Jim loved the industry and passed that passion along to several of his children and ultimately grandchildren who are involved and successful in the industry today.

Jim took up residence in Sparta, NJ with his 5 children full time in 1967, and lived in Sparta until the mid 80's. Jim and his family were members of Our Lady of the Lake Church.

Jim is survived by 3 children, Kathleen McCarten- Bricketto and Husband Joe, of Coral Springs, Florida, Robert McCarten of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and James W. McCarten Jr., and Wife Colleen of Lebanon NJ. Jim had 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his two beloved daughters, Madelyn Chudley and Theresa McCarten and his brother, Gerald McCarten. Jim suffered from short term Alzheimer's for several years.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday November 18, at 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of the Lake R.C. Church, 294 Sparta Ave, Sparta New Jersey. Interment to follow at Sparta Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday November 17, 2016, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton, New Jersey.
