Emily Ann Giller, 88, of Newton, passed away at Valley View Care Center in Newton on September 6, 2016.

Born in Newark, on December 13, 1927, to William and Emily Meister, Emily lived in Pompton Lakes for many years before retiring to Ocean Isle Beach, NC. She recently moved to Hackettstown to be closer to her kids. She lived a happy and healthy life and was described as "spry" on her 88th birthday.

Emily worked as a secretary for a commercial engineer at Bell Telephone in Newark and loved her job. She said it was what she always wanted to be until she met her future husband, George, on a blind date. They soon got married and raised four sons and one daughter in Pompton Lakes. Throughout her life, she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many and she faithfully cared for family and friends. A volunteer for many years at St. Mary's School and Church, Emily helped with numerous volunteer opportunities at the school, one of which was serving Thanksgiving dinners to the needy before serving her own Thanksgiving dinner at home. She was always thinking of ways to help others. She avidly sewed, crocheted and knitted, putting these skills to benevolent use by making blankets and hats for babies in hospitals. Emily loved Christmas and spread the Christmas spirit far and wide for many years, buying gifts for needy children.

After retiring from Sterns (Macy's), Emily and George moved to North Carolina where she enjoyed aqua aerobics, was a member of the women's club, and was active in a sewing circle. She continued to make meals for people who were sick or grieving.

After 52 blissful years of marriage, George preceded Emily in death on November 11, 2009. She leaves to cherish her memory, her four sons, George, Jr., Matthew, Peter and Christopher; her daughter, Suzanne Boland and husband, Thomas; her six grandchildren, Brianna, Peter, Jr., Sean, Connor, Tess and Patrick; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Her family extends a special thank you to Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice and Valley View staff for their compassionate care.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2016, at St, Mary's R.C. Church, 17 Pompton Avenue, Pompton Lakes. Interment of cremains will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Wounded Warrior Project, 4200 Morgantown Road, Fayetteville, NC 28314.
