Lois Grace Chammings, 73, of Stillwater, died Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at Morristown Medical Center.

Born in Paterson, Mrs. Chammings had been a resident of Stillwater since 1959. She received her Masters in Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Mrs. Chammings was a sixth grade teacher at Stillwater Elementary School, retiring in 2004 after 35 years of service. A member of Harmony Hill United Methodist Church, Mrs. Chammings held numerous positions in the church. She was a member of the 4-H Advisory Council, a member of the 4-H Foundation, secretary for the Sussex County State Fair, the Agriculture and Forage director of the Sussex County State Fair, and a trustee to Chaps and Breeches in Stillwater. Mrs. Chammings was also a member of the Sussex County Retired Educators Association, a life member of the Stillwater Historical Society, and a member of the Sunshine Singers. She was an avid gardener and farmer as well.

The daughter of the late Herbert and Edith (nee Thomas) Birchenough, Mrs. Chammings is survived by her husband of 56 years, Chief Ed Chammings; two daughters, Joy Ann Chammings, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Lisa Lynne Chammings, of Stillwater; and one brother, Herbert Birchenough, Jr., of Stillwater.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Harmony Hill United Methodist Church, 919 Fairview Lake Road, Stillwater. Interment will follow in Stillwater Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, May 13, 2016, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High Street, Newton.
