Sylvester J. Fletcher, 81, of Newton, died Sunday, April 24, 2016, at Morristown Medical Center.

Born in Ebony, Virginia, Mr. Fletcher moved to New Brunswick in 1956 then to Sussex County in 1957. He received his BS from Virginia State College. A soil scientist, Mr. Fletcher had over fifty years of experience in the analysis of natural resources, conservation and environmental planning and community development. He worked for USDA and Natural Resource Dynamics, retiring with over 20 years of service.

His business and professional activities and affiliations included Manager/Owner of Natural Resource Dynamics; President of Mother Fletcher's Inc. Family Owned Foods Corporation; Certified Professional Soil Scientist, charter member of the NJ Association of Professional Soil Scientists and past President of the NJ Chapter of Soil Conservation Society of America; and was the author of Soil Survey Reports for Sussex and Warren Counties. Mr. Fletcher was also a former member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Newark Conservancy; a former member of N.J. Governor's Advisory Council on Minority Business Development; and a former member of the Sussex County Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Fletcher's community service activities included his involvement in the N.J.
& U.S. Jaycee Organization where he served as Past National Director, Past State Chaplain, Past State Committee Chairman, President of the Greater Newton Chapter of N.J. Jaycees and secretary of the Greater Newton Jaycee. Currently active in the Newton Rotary Club, Mr. Fletcher joined the club in 1975 and has served as chair of numerous fundraising and community service projects, Chair of the Recycling Awareness & Education Committee, Chair of the Club handbook, Chair of the Club Director, and Chair of the "junk" car clean-up project for five municipalities, was a member of the Rotary District #7470 World Community Service Committee, and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship in 2004 by Rotary International. He also formerly served on the Sussex County College Study Committee and was a charter member of the Feasibility Committee. A member of the Yellow Frame Presbyterian Church for 20 years, Mr. Fletcher was currently a member of the Panther Valley Ecumenical Church.

The son of the late St. Luke Fletcher and Maude Christeal Bishop Fletcher, Mr. Fletcher was also predeceased by two siblings, John Robinson and Anna McKinnon. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Catherine M. Fletcher, of Newton; two children, Karen Fletcher and husband, Bruce, of Newton, and Keith Fletcher and wife, Pam, of Newton; six siblings, Bertha Nunn of Suitland, Maryland, Dorothy Olivia Jefferson of Richmond, Virginia, Thomas Earl Fletcher of Richmond, Virginia, Bernette Johnson of Richmond, Virginia, Carolyn Alston of Springdale, Maryland, and St. Luke Fletcher, Jr. of Brodnax, Virginia. He is also survived by a host of great-nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the Panther Valley Ecumenical Church, 1490 County Route 517, Hackettstown.
